In the last few weeks, a number of groups and organizations across the country have publicly expressed concerns with the Marketplace Fairness Act. Although House leaders have been clear that they have no intention to pass the legislation, Senate leaders have expressed their intent to move the bill in the final weeks of Congress.

Justin Vélez-Hagan, Executive Director of the National Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce,  recently expressed his opposition to the Marketplace Fairness Act in an article in The Hill. In the article, Hagan argued that more taxes and regulations, especially within a prosperous sector like the Internet, will not be beneficial to the economy, nor its millions of small businesses and employees.

This week, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) penned an opinion piece in the Washington Post advocating for Congress to reject any attempt to further taxing Internet access and sales. Senator Cruz has been a vocal opponent of the Marketplace Fairness Act, which passed the U.S. Senate in May of 2013.

On November 10th, President Obama issued a statement that called on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to issue a rule that protects network neutrality and the Open Internet. Currently, the FCC is working to develop a set of rules regarding how Internet Access Providers can deal with Internet traffic. All eyes of the nation have been on the FCC as they grapple with how to preserve the Open Internet under stronger legal authority.
