eBay Inc. Urges Congress to Include a Meaningful Small Business Exemption in Internet Sales Tax Bill

April 20, 2013

On April 18th, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) filed a motion for the U.S. Senate to take up the Internet sales tax bill on the Senate floor the week of April 22nd.  eBay Inc. has repeatedly called on Senators to ensure that small business are protected and that they are not subject to tax enforcement agents thousands of miles away.  However, the legislation currently does not include adequate protections for small business using the Internet to reach consumers all across the country and would subject any business selling over $1 million in total remote sales to this new tax enforcement regime.

Brian Bieron, Senior Director of Global Public Policy at eBay Inc., made the following statement regarding the Internet sales tax bill being considered in the Senate:

“The Internet sales tax bill that is being rushed to a vote needs to be improved right now with a meaningful small business exemption to protect small businesses from becoming tax collectors for every state across America, threatening them with audits and litigation by tax collectors from states that are thousands of miles away from where they live, work and create jobs.”
