5 Things to Know About eBay’s Impact

2024 was a record-setting year for the go-to platform for pre-loved goods.

eBay recently released its 2024 Impact Report, an annual assessment of how we’re bettering communities through our work.

Here are five key findings:

Big wins for small biz. More than 70% of merchandise sold on eBay is from small business sellers — and eBay is eager to help them build online storefronts to reach global audiences. In 2024, eBay awarded 50 U.S. sellers with $10,000 “Up & Running” grants, which are paired with mentorship and support.

Driving Recommerce. With 134 million buyers, there are both economic and environmental benefits to this massive global “recommerce” industry. In 2024, the company generated $5 billion in positive economic impact through recommerce while at the same time diverting 70,000 metric tons of waste from landfills.

Protecting Wildlife. In 2024, eBay blocked approximately 1 million potential violations for prohibited wildlife items such as ivory and other products made from endangered or threatened species.

$662 million to charity. eBay set a 5-year goal to generate $660 million through its “eBay for Charity” program, which enables sellers to donate a portion of their proceeds to charity — waiving certain fees to make donations easy and affordable. The program exceeded this goal a year early with $662 million donated by the end of 2024.

Employees lead — at work and in the community. In 2024, more than 2,500 eBay employees volunteered more than 60,000 hours — the equivalent of 2,500 calendar days — to support their communities
