Internet Sales Tax Legislation Would Impact Taxpayers

December 18, 2014

Last week, The News-Herald (AZ) published an editorial expressing opposition to the Marketplace Fairness Act. The writer explained that although Speaker of the House, John Boehner (R-OH), has promised to not move the legislation through the House this Congress, if the bill did pass, it would hurt taxpayers.

“Barring some unexpected stroke-of-midnight action in the U.S. House of Representatives, chances for a new law requiring wide collection of taxes on retail internet sales appear dead for this session of Congress. House Speaker John Boehner kept the Marketplace Fairness Act, which passed the Senate last year, from a House vote. We say that’s a good thing because there are few things most Americans need less than additional taxes.”

eBay Inc. has opposed the Marketplace Fairness Act because of its impact on American small businesses and consumers. We applaud that Speaker Boehner and the House of Representatives for taking a more deliberative approach to the Internet sales tax issue and appreciate their efforts on keeping this controversial bill from passing in the final weeks of Congress.
