Michael Buchanan, former Small Business Owner in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, published an opinion piece this week in the Southeast Missourian expressing his belief that the government should not seek to “punish people whose shopping choices we don't like by raising their taxes”.   Buchanan explained that there are many ways to “level the playing field” for local businesses, but we shouldn’t create a habit of disadvantaging a certain business model to do so.

Today, The Chippewa Herald published a letter to the editor submitted by eBay seller Rebecca Germain, owner of MidWest Scrapbook in New Berlin, Wisconsin.  In her letter, Rebecca expressed her concern the Internet sales tax legislation pending in Congress and how it would negatively impact small Internet-enabled businesses all over the country.

Last week, eBay hosted 12 senior staff members of the European Parliament as part of their ten-day visit to the U.S. to learn more about the impact of trade in the U.S. and the country's role in the negotiation and approval of trade agreements.  eBay Government Relations had the pleasure of taking the group through the Commerce Innovation Showcase and speaking to them about eBay's role as an enabler of small business growth and the power of technology-enabled trade.

Ali Gabel, a member of eBay Inc.’s Government Relations team, participated in a recent discussion hosted by the Electronic Transaction Association (ETA) on Capitol Hill on how mobile payments, like PayPal, are accelerating mobile commerce and changing the face of retail. For 14 years, PayPal has been revolutionizing the payments’ industry -- first with online payments in 1998 and then with mobile payments in 2006.
