Online Privacy

eBay Point-of-View:

  • eBay strives to keep the best interests of our vast and diverse community in mind. We work zealously to safeguard information about their purchases, sales, searches, and communications.
  • As international, federal and state policymakers wrestle with the difficult task of protecting online privacy, eBay serves as a leading resource on best practices to keep the online community safe.
  • Along with numerous other technologies and programs, eBay uses State of the Art encryption, secure socket layers (SSL), and firewall technology to protect our users' information.
  • Any privacy legislation must ensure a safe and secure online environment, by providing a uniform technology neutral federal solution requiring broad disclosure principles for all online and offline business practices.

Legislative Protection:

  • Fighting Spam - The sending of unsolicited commercial email, or “Spam,” is a major problem for Internet users and the industry. eBay supports the federal CAN-SPAM Act which:
    • Created rules of the road for email marketers to prevent them from spamming consumers without their consent; and
    • Criminalized the harvesting of email addresses for the purpose of sending unwanted Spam
  • Fighting Spyware - As the U.S Congress continues to consider legislation to combat Spyware on the Internet, eBay supports a uniform federal prohibition on harmful information-collection schemes that deceive and diminish users' Internet experience. Legislation must be carefully crafted to protect legitimate business practices (such as cookies) and actions we take at eBay and PayPal to keep our community safe from fraud and other nefarious practices.

Please Take Action!

We urge you to support federal legislation that will continue to fight unwanted Spam and help curtail the growth of deceptive and unscrupulous Spyware programs.
