FCC Chairman Discuss Net Neutrality at Consumer Electronics Show

January 12, 2015

Last week, while speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman, Tom Wheeler, hinted that he's in favor of President Obama's net neutrality proposal, which would classify broadband Internet service under Title II of the Communications Act. On November 10th, President Obama issued a statement that called on the FCC to issue a rule that protects network neutrality and the Open Internet. Over the past year, the FCC has been working to develop a set of rules regarding how Internet Access Providers can deal with Internet traffic.

During his speech, Chairman Wheeler said he now favors a "just and reasonable" standard for the management of Internet traffic. Those words, which he noted appear in Title II, offer the "best protections" for consumers, he said. Wheeler also said that he would want to allow prioritization of Internet traffic in certain cases, such as for medical devices. The FCC is expected to release their ruling on the Open Internet in the coming weeks.
