eBay Inc. Releases Commerce 3.0 Report in Turkey

October 24, 2014

eBay Inc.’s Commerce 3.0 research has consistently described the fundamental changes that global trade is currently undergoing: online networks and digital services empower small businesses to reach beyond a local consumer base and access global markets. Our latest research shows that Turkish entrepreneurs are no different and they are taking part in this trade evolution by leveraging innovative tools and solutions to build successful global operations.

On Friday 24 October, at PayPal Turkey’s Cross- Border Business Press Meeting at the Four Seasons Hotel in Istanbul, Turkey, eBay Inc. released a report entitled "Commerce 3.0: A Springboard for Turkish Small Business to the Global Economy". This report, which draws on a detailed analysis of data on eBay and PayPal transactions, sheds light on how Turkish firms use eBay and PayPal as their springboard to customers in as many as 175 different countries.

The report reveals how the Internet, technology and innovation together create a truly global marketplace where smaller, less experienced and remote firms can enter, grow and compete alongside the larger and more experienced companies. In fact, the research shows how eBay and PayPal provide unparalleled global opportunities for small businesses all across Turkey.

However, the report also points out that there are barriers to technology-enabled trade that make it difficult for small firms in particular to benefit from the global marketplace. The report offers recommendations to Turkish policymakers on how to facilitate small business exporting, including:

  • Strengthening the power of the Internet to support the Turkish economy by enacting the current draft proposal on e-commerce
  • Increasing the openness, transparency and quality of regulatory and enforcement procedures
  • Facilitating for the provision as well as exportation of data-based services by removing localization requirements and adopting the draft law on personal data protection
  • Developing further logistics services that meet the needs of internationally-minded Turkish small firms, raising the Low Value Threshold, and removing importation taxes and restrictions
