Both eBay and PayPal maintain a robust set of policies designed to educate and clearly define prohibited items and activity. These policies are actively enforced by dedicated teams around the globe who are supported by sophisticated technology that filters our platforms in search of prohibited goods and practices. When such activity is identified, we take action to stop it and in appropriate cases we remove users from our services. We work with law enforcement to seek prosecution for criminal acts that impact our platforms and our customers, and we fully support stiff penalties for online crimes to create a strong deterrent effect. We also work with regulatory agencies everywhere we do business to make sure our policies accurately reflect applicable laws and regulations.
One example of our efforts to ensure a safe, open, and transparent platform for people to buy and sell goods and services all over the world is our tireless efforts to prevent stolen goods from being listed on any eBay site. We go well beyond simply having a policy against the sale of stolen goods on eBay---we have staff dedicated specifically to partnering directly with both retailers and law enforcement officials to quickly identify and remove anyone attempting to sell stolen products on eBay. We investigate referrals directly from retailers as well as information from our own internal filters about possible sales of stolen goods and, where appropriate, proactively refer cases to law enforcement for prosecution. We are fully dedicated to making eBay an extremely unwelcome platform for any criminal wishing to sell stolen goods online.
eBay Inc. believes that both private industry and the public sector have an important role to play in keeping the Internet open and safe. We collaborate with tech industry peers, retailers, brand owners, trade associations and government regulators to share best practices and stay on top of emerging trends. We also urge lawmakers to understand that the policies and programs we have voluntarily put in place, for the good of our customers and our company, can be much more effective than a one-size-fits-all regulatory or legislative mandate. At the same time, we look forward to continued cooperation with our government and private sector partners to maintain and enhance these programs.
