The new commerce

eBay is helping to create a new era of opportunity for European small businesses and entrepreneurs. Using our platform, they are able to serve customers all over the world – including less prosperous regions.

Traditional commerce over distance carries costs related to transportation, red tape, communication, and other impediments. These costs increase with distance, and have traditionally constrained small enterprises to trading in a limited area.

Technology is changing that. Online commerce reduces these costs dramatically. The costs for trading within the EU are four times lower on eBay compared to traditional commerce.

Use the interactive map to explore how the new commerce is taking shape in each EU country. Search or select a country to get started.

Digital density is a measure of online commerce activity among small businesses across EU regions. It shows that a vibrant technology enabled business environment exists not just in economic hot spots, but also in remote and less prosperous regions. Digital density has been calculated for each region by combining the number of, and sales by, eBay MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) per 100,000 inhabitants respectively. We have then ranked regions in each country based on how they perform in relation to the national average.

The data covers transactions of small online businesses in the EU and globally from 2010 to 2014. To ensure that the community of small commercial enterprises on eBay was property captured, the data has been limited to transactions by sellers with sales of more than USD 10,000 annually on the eBay marketplace. These are referred to as "commercial sellers".
